This activity was by far the hardest project I have tackled. I am not an Excel fan and I doubt I ever will be. My daughter and husband use Excel constantly for statistics, graphs, formulas, and whatever else they play with (can you tell I am not a fan?).
Using the NCES site to look at our comparison to the rest of the country in math, one can easily see where we are nationally. I was not real surprised that we were over 9 points below the national average as unfortunately that seems to be WV's trend.
SORT THE SCORES ASCENDING/TOTAL |
My question for the the statistics is why we would ever need to use the sum for data analysis?

This is a Jing image of my scatter plot. I played with it a bit and put arrows with Excel and the text boxes using Jing.
SCATTER PLOT |
West Virginia's 8th grade math scores were low compared to the National Public. I was surprised thought that DC and CA were below us. I would have to guess this is due to the fact of their blended class make-up. I would venture to guess that Florida would be next to start falling. By looking at the scatter plot, one can see that WV is not very close to the National Average. This would be an excellent tool to compare your classes (if you only teach one subject, hard for an elementary/special education teacher).
