- My
name is Candi Thomas and I teach special education in the modified diploma
program at North Marion High School. I teach 2 collaborative 11th grade
history classes, 2 science, and 2 social studies courses in my room. I
teach students who have severe and profound disabilities.
- Our daughter,
Haley is 21, will graduate from WVU a semester early from the Nursing
Program. She got an early acceptance into the Nurse Practitioners program.
She is getting married on Feb 7, 2015 and her fiancé is a nurse at
Ruby and is a year into the NP program. My son is 17 years old and lives
an extremely exciting life. He has been racing motocross since he was 4
years old and has raced on the National scene since he was 9. He lives in
Cairo, GA (800 miles away!!!) at a prestigious motorcycle training
facility with 24 other racers from around the world. We travel extensively
to his races and was in TX last week, VA this weekend, Indiana next
weekend, Tennessee the following weekend, and Michigan after that. We
usually fly to where he is and he travels with the facility. It is very
hard on me letting him go but this is his dream and I support whatever my
kids chose to do except in January when it was snow day upon snow day and
he is sending me pics from the golf course in Panama or beach pics from
Florida!!
- I hope to gain
more ways to present information to my students. We rely on technology a
lot in my classes and most of my classes are set up as PBL's.
- I will have my
graduate degree in Special Education this fall.

I'm kind of wondering if I have met you before. I live in Katy, outside of Farmington and did my student teaching and 75 hour clinical with Mrs. Stanton. As a requirement I interviewed someone in the special education classroom but I cannot remember who it was.
ReplyDeleteMy son just started dirt bike racing. His second race was a couple of weekends ago. The course was 7 miles long and he did all 3 laps. We strategically placed people along the wooded track. At the end he came up to me and said, "Mom I got ran over 3 times." I said, "Well… you'll get faster. These kids have been doing this longer than you and they are bound to push you out of the way." And then he said, "No mom… I literally got run over 3 times." I almost had a heart attack. Thank goodness for good safety gear.
It looks like you keep yourself very busy with your family while going to school and working! Hopefully you have a great weather this weekend for the races. I have never been to one but have always wanted to experience one!
ReplyDeleteHi Candi,
ReplyDeleteVery nice to meet you. My daughter, Natalie Hissam, is a special ed teacher at East Park Elementary School in Fairmont. I thought I'd mention that in case you all know each other. My gransons, Trey (13) and Gavin Hissam (10), just got dirt bikes and ride out at Levels (I think). It scares me to death. I look forward to sharing class and ideas with you.
Yes I do know Natalie and the boys! Anthony did pee wee wrestling a long time ago when Trey first started. Gavin was a baby. Jaime, when did you do your student teaching? I have only been at North for two years. Anthony has been racing for over 12 1/2 years now and I don't ever remember it making me nervous. We have a friend, Layne Michael, who does the woods races but Anth never got into them. If you look deeper into my blog you can see a broken femur from two years and "knock on wood" that was his HOPEFULLY only accident with an injury.
ReplyDeleteNice to meet everyone :)
Hi Candi! Welcome! Nice to "meet" you! Congrats on being nearly finished with your graduate degree; it's a great feeling, isn't it? lol
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine having my son live so far away, but knowing that he would be following his dream *may* make it easier.. of course, mine is 10 years younger than yours so... maybe in 10 years I'd have a different take! lol
Enjoy the class! Looking forward to working with you!
Hi Candi! I think it's wonderful that your son has been able to live his dream! I used to ride a motorcycle when I was in high school! I'm turning 50 this year and i told my husband I want to get a Harley. He freaked out. I know this isn't the same as motorcross but I do relate to the thrill of riding motorcycles!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to here your classes are project-based! This approach is very conducive to helping students develop the skills, attitudes and mindsets they need to be fully literate in the digital age!
Candi,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to 6809! I hope to obtain some constructive ways to use technology in my classroom and I feel that you as a special education teacher can utilize digital media and an effective way to reach many of the challenged students. Best wishes for a great summer semester!
I did my 75 hour clinical spring 2012 and my student teaching fall 2012
ReplyDeleteCandi-
ReplyDeleteIt sure does sound like you have a very exciting life! Your children sound like they are driven and doing great in life! I bet you are so proud! Getting to travel to watch your son race sounds very exciting! I am sure he loves that you all support him so much! Anyways, I also taught special education last year. I loved it. If the circumstances were right in the school I was teaching at, I would have loved to stay in that position. However, I am happy to be in a classroom again. Good luck this semester and safe travels!
Candi,
ReplyDeleteYou sure are busy traveling all over to watch your son compete, but it is great that you are there to see it. Congratulations are in order for your daughter as that is a major accomplishment. I hope your travels stay safe and enjoy this course.
